TO CELEBRATE PAVEL TROST'S 65TH BIRTHDAY

Pavel Trost, professor at Charles University, is 65. He was born in Šternberk, Moravia on October 3, 1907, and was raised in the bilingual milieu of the Moravian capital of Brno. Although his remarkable work encompasses many languages and literatures, such as Slavic, Germanic, Romance, Armenian, Balkan, Yiddish, Ugro-Finnic, and others, his name as a Baltic scholar occupies a very special position in the history of linguistics.

His first article on the Latvian daina appeared in 1935, when he was only 28. During the final prewar years (1937 -1938) he studied in Lithuania. He kept on working even under the very unfavorable conditions of the war. After the war, he taught at Olomouc University. In 1956 he came to Prague University and in 1961 was appointed Professor of Indo-European and Baltic Linguictics.

I was fortunate enough to meet Professor Trost and to study under him for many years. I cannot imagine a teacher more helpful and yet unassumingly so. The year 1958 seems to be the culmination of Pavel Trost's activity in the Baltic field; he published five of the most basically important articles on Baltic and Balto-Slavic syntax. For me, however, this part of his bibliography has a completely personal and intimate meaning. At that time I was writing my dissertation on Balto - Slavic syntax and there was no modern source or other starting point for my work. Five articles for one student in one year! Only the best and the most dedicated of teachers could offer this.

Professor Trost tops the remarkable "Pleiad" of great men of Bohemia dedicated to the Baltic idea: Čelakovsky, Geitler, Zubaty, Važny, Machek, Trost. Humanism and fortitude as the intrinsic value of Czech science explain the fact that a "small" nation could have managed to give the world so many brilliant scholars devoting their skills and thoughts to even "smaller" nations. At the same time, Professor Trost, as a member of the Prague School, is the first structuralist in the history of Baltic studies who entered the new era. Therefore, his anniversary is an important event both for Czech science and for the world's academic community of Balticists.
