Abstract:
Antanas Smetona’s Lithuanian Sense of Freedom, or What do We Know About Interwar Authoritarianism?
Algimantas Jankauskas
Abstract
The purposes of this article are the following: to expand the scope
of political ideas about the inter-war period by seeking to determine
whether the turning point away from democracy was unique
to Lithuania or was a general ideological concept of “authoritarianism”
and its ideological forces by relying on the political writings
of Antanas Smetona; to consider whether the ideological legacy
of Antanas Smetona is today a relic or something worth updating
and revising. In general the present article is a reconsideration
of Antanas Smetona authoritarian rule and its implications.
