CONTEMPORARY LITHUANIAN DRAMA PART II

This issue concludes the special presentation of contemporary Lithuanian drama. In the previous issue of Lituanus (Fall, 1967) we presented an introduction on "Contemporary Lithuanian Drama" by Prof. B. Vaškelis of Lafayette College, Easton, Pa., and two original plays: The Orator by K. Saja and A Christmas Skit by A. Škėma. The reader is especially referred to the article by Prof. Vaškelis as an introduction to the two one-act plays published in this issue.

The morality play Everyboy (or The Beard) by Algirdas Landsbergis is published in English for the first time. The second play published in this issue — The Gravediggers by Kostas Ostrauskas previously appeared in part in Lituanus (Fall, 1966). It is published here in its entirety for the first time.

Short biographical sketches of Landsbergis and Ostrauskas are given preceding their plays. Their work is evaluated in the article by Prof. Vaškelis referred to above.

Due to the problems encountered in translating the plays, the publication of these special issues was delayed, which is deeply regretted by the editors and the publisher. We hope, however, that these special issues will at least partially reveal a creative world which is generally inaccessible to the English-speaking reader.
